Hello angels friends... Posting has been few and far between, but today I have been thinking we've had enough of the cold weather, bring on Spring! Well, a girl can wish for warmer days, but for now I can't think of a sweeter reason to treat yourself to fresh flowers to brighten our moods alittle...

What am I doing now? Well, my photo business for portraiture has been coming along nicely. I am really enjoying it and learning so much.. For the magazine world, I am working on a Marie Antoinette photo shoot which I will be sharing bits ad pieces to you very soon...

A letter of hope by Maureen Hancock: Famous Medium, and Author As I lay in bed today trying to get up to prepare for tonight’s event, I could feel each and every one of your precious children gathering, as if to get ready for this unique reunion. I tried to imagine each of you struggling to get out of bed each day, dreading the supermarket or the simple task of answering the phone. I sat in the feeling of you trying to get through each “First” without the laughter and physical presence of your child; first birthday, anniversary of their passing, Mother’s or Father’s Day, and of course, Christmas or whatever you celebrate, or choose not to celebrate. I wondered if it feels just as raw Ten or Twenty years later…still missing them. Here is a letter I have written for you from them.
Mom, Dad, it’s me. I’m still here. I know it’s hard to believe sometimes or understand in the way I try to show you, but I’m still me. I hear you talk to me several times a day. When you hear nothing back, or you say I don’t answer, that doesn’t mean I’m not right there next to you, smiling. I smile because I know things you won’t know until the day I reach my hands out to you and we’re together again in a more familiar way. In the meantime, I will keep trying to show you I’m okay and still around. If a friend or relative calls to tell you they got a sign or had a dream of me, please know that I tried to reach you first but the line was busy, or full of pain. When you quiet your mind and learn to clear the clutter, I can get through better.
Tell my brother’s and sister’s to live for me, and do things to make me proud. If they don’t want to talk about me, it’s just that the pain is too much to bear so they bury it to survive. Let everyone in the family grieve in their own way. Try to laugh again and get out of the house. When you can do that, it sends waves of love through my being. Let go of unwanted and useless feelings like guilt, anger and fear. I can’t break through those. Here’s how I let you know I’m not dead; just different:
I’m the butterfly that dances around you as you walk. I make rainbows appear even when there is no rain; I made that red dragonfly land on you as you thought of me. The hawk sat perched outside your kitchen window and then swooped down as you stood on the deck or in the car. I keep making my song come on and you know it’s me. I stand beside your bed and brush my hand against your face. I sent a text or phone message after I passed-yup, I’m amazing. I can do things you can’t wrap you’re brain around. You saw my face in someone else-it’s called transfiguration. I was the old guy who smiled at you or the strange woman who asked you a poignant question. The woman in the mall called out to her son…it was my name. I saw you get the tattoo my brother, and I can’t believe my sister got one too. Mom always hated tattoos…now she has one. Dad, you taught me so much. I didn’t get the chance to thank you so I’m doing it now. It’s never too late to say I love you. Hug my siblings and do things that are out of character for you. Mom and Dad, my siblings think they lost me and you. The best gift you can give me is that you will promise to live for me and I will live through you…you will see me again one day, but until then, LIVE, LAUGH, and celebrate my memory. We are so much more than this physical vehicle that drives us around for awhile. Lift your head up and run around the bases, sliding into home, into my arms. I’m not dead; I’m just different.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Fun News!
If your a fan of the show " Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" then you must have seen last nights Thanksgiving tear-jerker! The Dunn family, the soupers, as they are so well known for. An amazing family with a heart of gold. I was honored and thrilled when the designers of the show asked me for something hand painted to decorate the house as the owner loved shabby chic roses. So I took an antique frame and painted the glass with chalkboard paint, then painted white cabbage roses on the front. They had written, " Welcome Home" to the Dunn family. I loved the pink wall paper they chose, just lovely. Here's a few screen clips of the chalkboard frame. You can go to ABC.com to watch the episode..

Although I am still painting roses, I have been very busy these days with my new photo business. I never thought I would be doing portraiture but it's been one of the most challenging and amazing things I've done in years..I still have so much to learn but I'm having so much fun doing it. I've been looking for unusally backdrops and found the most gorgoues "shower curtain" EVER! ok, Picture this, a French chair, a vase of fresh roses, and one of my clients in a vintage prom dress with this shower curtain in the background. Love!

I love a perfectly exposed photograph, it’s invigorating!

Digital photography has made everything so easy for us, hasn’t it? Remember the days when you couldn’t wait to pick up your photos at your nearest photo lab to see how your pictures came out? I worked at a photo lab years ago and I would witness disappointed customers with photo after photo of underexposed or overexposed, blurry or out of focus pictures; mainly because you couldn’t view your photos beforehand. Now with digital cameras, that’s all changed, and we have Lightroom, Photoshop and other great programs to help us along with a “not so great photo.” And, with easy point and shoot cameras, it’s hard to tell the difference between an amateur photographer and a professional, trained one. Or is it? If you’re paying attention there is. Let me explain...

Jen recommended to me the book, Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. An excellent book to truly understand the meaning behind correct exposure. I'm still reading, and learning, I love it!!

I took some photos of my son's friend, Annie, "in manual". Of course, the camera loves her so taking a pretty shot of her was easy. However, my exposure was not quite right,and even though I was outdoors, the lighting was off giving the photo a flat look. While you want to get the best shot possible straight out of the camera, if you do happen to fall shy of a great shot, there are ways to help fix the problem. With that said, there is a down side. As you can tell by my photos they are not as sharp and crisp due to alterations.

Jen, helped me out with some tricks from Lightroom. The improvements she made really helped to make Annie's beautiful face shine.

So much to talk about today...First off, we have a winner in my magazine drawing. This week has brought many changes. "IRENE" really packed a punch here in my neck of the woods. Thankfully only one tree was lost, and power was finally restored yesterday. WOW, I have to tell you, living by candle light really slows life down to a screeching halt doesn't it. I'm not a huge phone person so checking my emails from there was not an option. NO COMPUTER! Just me, hubby, the kids, and my little Jessy, together in one room for two days! WOW! That hasn’t happened since my kids were small. After we all surrendered to IRENE, and the complaining mellowed to a low moan, we had so much fun laughing and playing cards. In my busy world, it proved to be refreshing and a reminder, to stop and smell my own roses... I hope my east coast friends are doing well and hopefully power for you has been restored too.

Shifting gears…

My Vintage Rose Collection business has been around since 2002, and since then so many aspects of my business has evolved. From painting roses, home designing, to writing and shooting for magazines and now my own magazine, The Feminine Home.

My New Venture. Jo-Anne Coletti Photography, Inspired by Romantic Moments.

My love for photography has always been the foreground of my creativity. After shooting for countless magazines, I am now turning to portraiture. I'm very excited about my new venture. I have so much to learn! A dear photographer friend told me recently that too many people are popping up thinking they can buy a camera and become a photographer. It's not that easy. AND SHE’S RIGHT! There is so much to it, and very different than shooting interiors, but I’m very excited to take my next step.

I will be attending photo classes and doing as much research as possible.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

I will be conducting complementary photo shoots to establish my portfolio. While I will still continue to paint roses, my inventory will be cut back to hand painted items, and my personal note cards and vintage finds. So be sure and check my website for new paintings often.

I will also continue to photograph and write for Romantic Homes, and Jeanne d'Arc Living magazine, so look for upcoming articles in their Christmas issues and articles for 2012…

A bit of fun news! I received a call last week from the show, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" -- Is this a scam I thought?? Nope, it's real...So packages of hand painted goodies are off to their new shabby chic makeover location. (Can't disclose just yet).

I'm off to where the house will be re-built to help with the decorating.

My newest creation- I loved making this, and it was very easy to do. A can of chalkboard paint, purchased at Lowes and your in business.

Your project can be an old window, glass frame, watering can, planters, a wall or really anything with a smooth surface.

Supplies-

1. Chalkboard paint

2. A good brush

Apply two coats of chalkboard paint to your project using long, smooth strokes to any clean, smooth surface.

Ahh, The smell of sweet Roses! June’s proudest moment!

I have been photographing my beautiful garden of roses

all week and the view from my studio window is spectacular!

I made my way to Roseland as well, located in New Bedford

Ma. It’s everything they said it is and much more, a must see

if you are in the area. I could hardly contain myself from filling

my car with every pink and lavender color rose they had; the

selection was incredible! So, I narrowed it down to 5.

Here, I have a few showcased in

this fabulously old toolbox which includes- Eden Climber,

a soft pink color, Enchanted Evening, a lavender shade

and my favorite of all,

Blue Girl, a pretty medium size lavender rose.

I remember years ago sitting in a Barnes and Noble book store flipping through the very first issue of Romantic Homes magazine. I was in awe, as at that time there were very few really romantic publications. I thought, finally, someone understands me! I immediately became a subscriber. I was hooked as many of you are as well. I saved clipping after clippings and even have a Romantic Homes scrapbook that I reference from time to time when I need inspiration...

Over the years, Romantic Homes has always been so very good to me, and I am ever so grateful. And now, I am honored to be a contributor for this lovely 'old friend' Romantic Homes- Thank you Jacqueline! I am delighted and thrilled!!!

I recently joined a fun website called, Pinterest- http://pinterest.com/

It’s a site where you can share your photos and repin photos you have found from other sites. It’s so much fun and a great place to find interesting images. I have had a love for photography since I opened my website back in 2002. For me, setting up a vignette and capturing what I felt inside was life changing. From then on, any occasion I had going on was a photo shoot- a live moment to capture nature, life or something as simple as pink lemonade bottles waiting to tell their story.

Photography is about telling a story, capturing a mood, a feeling, to cause people to reflect inwards. A truly beautiful photo is not always about its obvious beauty, but its essence. To move someone in a way that stirs emotion. This is a gift.

The photos I have selected for this post were found on the web- please a sincere apology for not knowing the names of the talented photographers of these images. For me, these photos are more than just beautiful, they have soul...

Whenever I see lilacs...

Whenever I see lilacs, forgotten memories of my childhood come back to me. Aside from their magnificent aroma, lilacs greet the world at springtime like an old friend. I remember picking arm fulls of this fragrant flower with my mother as a young girl. Anything that could hold water was filled with lilacs. What a beautiful site it was; the whole house smelled so fresh and sweet...

I picked these on the side of the road where they grow wild for miles on end. My car was crawling with tiny spiders, but I figure it's a small price to pay for such loveliness...

Hello Friends!

With the second edition of my magazine approaching, "The Feminine Home, Where The Heart Is,” I hope to bring to you once again, beautiful homes, lovely poetry, and spiritual devotionals. There is still so much to be done, and being a one woman show, the author, publisher, designer, writer, and proof reader, there are bound for mishaps and flaws along the way. After all, I am only human. I give 110% of myself in everything I do; at least I try very hard. It comes from my heart...

I received one email in particular from a subscriber of my magazine (whose name I will not disclose) who writes-

“I strongly suggest you look at a copy of your next magazine before printing the rest this time. Watermarks and pixilated pictures really detracted from the experience"!

I know I cannot please everyone all of the time-No one can. It would be impossible to even try. Nonetheless, my vision is to bring awareness of our own inner beauty; our soul’s natural instinct to hear the music of a raindrop pattering on the windowpane, to see the beauty of a single rose, to find the bliss in ordinary living deep within your heart. This is my symphony.

Finding pleasure in little things is about living life “in the moment”- allowing your mind to be fully engaged in the everyday beauty that surrounds you. There’s a home-spun feeling of living life, simple- It brings reflections of days gone by with a charm that time has polished sweet.

Those are my hopes for you sweet reader. And if there are a few flaws, a few imperfections, please forgive this "one woman show"…

For starters, the name for instance; “Shabby Chic” is the perfect marriage and really says it all. Can you tell us how you came up with the name; when was your “light bulb moment” when the two- Shabby & Chic, came together in perfect harmony?

Over 20 years ago when I was starting the business there was an article in the British magazine World of Interiors titled Shabby Chic, the name suited the shop I was about to open perfectly.

You have said you have drawn a lot of your inspiration from your mother, who else inspires you and your style?

I get inspired by the unsung heroes. People who I meet at the flea markets who put their heart and souls into their products and their presentation. Always unique and heartfelt.

You have also said that you have no formal schooling in design, that life has been your school. If you were not an interior designer what would you be?

I think I would like to be a film producer.

So many designers are doing television shows on HGTV and other channels. I have seen your show on the Style Network years ago and loved it. Is that something that interests you now Rachel?

Doing a show is a lot of work, I am focusing on making the Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture™ stores as magical as possible as well as working on my licenses for Shabby Chic® and Simply Shabby Chic®, while I will never rule it out completely it is not on my radar right now.

Your blog is so warm, personal and inspirational- it’s like reading a book of poetry. Do you have a quote or motto that you live by?

I really like this quote by Kenneth Cole, I used it on a recent blog “It’s amazing what you find if you look in the opposite direction.

What do you do to relax? What is a perfect day for you?

Is there anything coming up for “Simply Shabby Chic collection” at Target? I love your white slip covered sofas- would this be something we could find at Target in the future?

We are always working on new launches in bedding for Simply Shabby Chic at Target. There will not be a line of slipcovered furniture for Target does offer Simply Shabby Chic Loose slipcovers that work with many different style sofas and are very affordable.

With the ground white and blissful my days are occupied with re-designing and re-arranging. This stunning Victorian stain glass is a treasure I splurged on this weekend. It did not take me long to decide it was surely coming home with me. I have omitted color around the house this winter being with so much pretty snow this year, it has inspired to bring the outdoors in.

Hello angel friends!

I love this time of year! Our first Christmas snow arrived early tonight, and just in time to put me in the holiday spirit. It's bake night and hubby is watching the Patriots and I'm up to my elbows in cookie dough. I am making two different kinds of chocolate chip cookies. The first is my recipe which is a super thin and crispy type and the other is a box mix by Barefoot Contessa. Have you tried her cookie and cake mixes? If not, your missing out, they are so delicious and yummy!

I'm also making carmel buttons- How to- Place on a cookie sheet pretzels, the square kind and place a carmel chocolate rolo on top and bake at 250 for 8-10 minutes. Then add a whole pecan on top of the melted chocolate rolo. Allow to cool and enjoy!

Thin, Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookies

• 1/2 cup (1/4 lb.) butter, melted and cooled to room temperature• 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
• 1/3 cup granulated sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (6 oz.)
• 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Preparation

1. In a bowl, with an electric mixer on medium speed, beat butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until well blended. Beat in 3 tablespoons water and the vanilla until smooth, scraping down sides of bowl as needed.
2. In another bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir or beat into butter mixture until well incorporated. Stir in chocolate chips and pecans, if using.
3. Drop dough in 1-tablespoon portions, 2 inches apart, onto buttered 12- by 15-inch baking sheets.
4. Bake in a 300° oven until cookies are lightly browned, 18 to 20 minutes; if baking more than one pan at a time, switch pan positions halfway through baking.
5. With a wide spatula, transfer cookies to racks to cool. If hot cookies start to break, slide a thin spatula under them to release; let stand on pan to firm up, 2 to 5 minutes, then transfer to racks to cool completely.

The Cover, Finally!!!

I took a photo of this abandon house on Deer Island NB Canada. My son Andrew thought I was crazy as the windows were broken and looked haunted to him. But I still saw its beauty. For some odd reason this old house speaks to me. I wrote a poem about it that will be in the magazine.

See this house, absent and worn

Once full of laughter and smiles

Rests forlorn and dim

Curtains left on the windows

shows good memories were there

Flowers in the garden

allowed to bloom without care

Summer will rest and winter will fall

But beauty will harvest, in spite of it all

For this house, tho tattered and old

This is a beautiful French style mirror with lovely garland bows and pretty hand painted blush roses.

I added just a soft touch of pink in these cabbage white roses, I think its the perfect amount of color.

Hello Friends! Summer has become a sticky one for alot of us but I hope your staying cool or able to find a pool somewhere.. No pool insight here, so Im staying cool in my studio. Here is my latest creation although not finished yet, hoping too tonight and list it tomorrow. I've had this mirror forever and was thinking its time to paint some white roses. I love the original garland details at the top of the mirror, its very French Provincial. This mirror is SOO heavy, a nice old one..

This old window has a delciate feel. I added vintage lace as the backdrop with hand made lace pockets that I tucked a piece of old paper inside for interest, and of course, my roses...

I love it when you find something fabulous, bring it home, and pull it all together using your favorite collections. I found this unique cabinet while antiquing at the Wrentham Country Store. The talented girl there, Jeannie DeForge, made this charming cabinet out of an old window, iron brackets and wooden shelves.

I put this in my bedroom along side my vanity. It's perfect for storing bed linens, blankets and lace.

I have to say, I tend to be less conservative in this room as far as my feminine side taking over me. Thank goodness hubby doesn't mind. After all it's a place to dream and feel romantic.

Don't hide your pretty lace & linens. Find lovely ways to display their beauty so all can enjoy them.

It's almost June, and that means wedding season. So, I thought I would share with you a collection of photos I found while surfing the web. Some I have had in storage for ideas in case I should ever re-new my vows. Oh how I would do it all so differently. Just check out this photo back in 1991. Does Linda the good witch from the Wizard of Oz come to mind? What was I thinking!!!

I love weddings! Even now I will browse through a bridal magazine just to view the pretty dresses, yummy cakes and photos. Whenever there's a wedding in my family my sister and I are the first ones to jump in and lend a creative hand. Now, planning a wedding on a blog is alot less stressful than in real life..I'm sure any bride-to-be can attest to that! So, in the spirit of wedding season, lets have some fun!

I try to write you a little poem with every post...

I've been enjoying packaging your pretties up this week and shipping them off to you. Usually my son Mark helps me, However he is very busy with his signs and making a wonderful business for himself. I am so proud of you honey!

I've also been spending time in my rose garden. It's pruning time and I can hardly believe the new growth already. Last year I planted two Peonies bushes called Sara Bernhart. They are the prettiest pale pink color. I can't wait to cut my first blooms of the year. Here is a photo from last year.

Eden Climber is one of my favorites, shown above. They are a hardy bloom and the perfect cutting rose.

Glorious Rose Arbors are

Roses & Chandeliers, a perfect marriage don't you think?

Continued from my previous post, Spring Cleaning- Shining antique crystal chandeliers is no easy task, but well worth the effort when they are on display and sparkling. I like to use a chandelier cleaner that you just spray on and let it dry itself clean. It really does work. All you need is a drop cloth to catch the wet drippings. This sconce shown above I purchased on ebay some years ago along with the French Chandelier below. This was shown in my very first issue of Romantic Homes August 2002.

A first of many poems to come...

Hello Spring chickadees! It's really ~~Spring~~-Summer time in Massachusetts- it reached a record high of 92 in some areas. But that's New England, we are use to never really having a mild Spring-time. But it never stops me from my annual spring clean-up. While hubby and his crew work the out-side, I'm hard at work in the house clearing shelves, dusting walls, decorative plates, china and chandeliers, painting the fireplaces, laundering slipcovers, pillows and throws. Phew! Whoever said the Shabby Chic look is easy..Ummm..wait, I think I did..I'm not complaining, but, I've been contemplating. For one thing, do I really need all these pillows. I must of washed 30 slipcovers in the last two days. Not to mention my 4 sofa's with white denim slips. Question- How many people does it take to put on a still wet from the washer slipcover? Let’s just say I have to wait until my family gets home. I think I am complaining..So what's my point. While I won't change my color of all white anytime soon, (I need a bright palette,) however, I think a big down-sizing is in order. If you notice Rachel Ashwell's design has changed somewhat introducing a rustic feel with less of everything. For me, my eyes need peace as I age. So for the next few weeks take notice to my website as I will be cleaning house. Lots of great stuff coming soon..

In the meantime, here’s my Spring cleaning in action. Before and after of my all time favorite Victorian cubby that holds all my china.

In the world of blogging, "visually speaking", great photographs can make all the difference in your presentation . Like a beautiful magazine cover. The reason you picked it up in the first place was purely visual. It captivated you enough to look inside. Which leads me to my new camera lens. While I like the camera lens on my Canon Rebel for home interiors, I've been experiencing with Canon's little lens that could- All for under $100.00. It's the 50mm 1.8. It's lightweight and affordable, and offers a fast f/1.8 aperture-- an excellent lens for people who like to shoot in low light. I've also been having fun with actions for photoshop that I found through Raised In Cotton. If your looking for camera tips this is a great blog}. The site for the actions is called Flora Bella . They have actions and textures you can purchase very inexpensively. Here are a few samples I've done with the Vintage Set.

I love the original photo however, if your looking for something muted with innocent hues this is a nice option. It gives a bit of an aged appearance.

I don't like to use the actions at 100%. They can appear over-done. You can adjust them for a more sudtle effect, while still maintaining the intigrity of the original photograph.

For a vintage look I used "Vintage Vigenette" and "Vintage Classic".

I have been HACKED!

oh c’mon guys, this is just awful!!! I have had this problem in the past but this time it’s out of control! I first realized what was happening when I received an email by a blog friend leading me to an inappropriate link. I thought, she would never send me such a thing. She told me her email was hacked. Then I was receiving them from other bloggers. And now, my email address has been hacked too! So please, if you receive an email from me relating to any such inappropriate or offensive links, please know this Did Not, nor Never will come from me, ever. It has even gotten to the point where someone connected my email address with a bad comment made to another blogger. NEVER, EVER would that come from me!!!!! So sad to think this is happening but It must be addressed, even on a rose blog.. It's very distressing to think what people do with their time)

A trip to Wrentham Ma. to visit one of my favorite shops ( Wrentham Country Store) is always on my "HAVE TO DO" list at least once a month. Shop owner, MaryEllen, has a natural talent for displaying eye catching vignettes. Her fine selection of cottage antiques alway seems to send me home with a treasure or two in hand. When in the Foxboro area, be sure and stop by -there's something sweet for everyone!

This is a very unique vintage mirror decoupaged in French style photos and newspaper on all sides of the mirror. I found this as is, and added pale cream hand painted roses and a dainty princess crown on the very top for added sparkle and shine.
